9-12 years (Skill Building and Development)
Development during this period is focused on how children process language, literacy, and creative arts. They will move from always viewing something in a concrete way with just the facts to being able to look at things with a more abstract approach. You can take advantage of this shift by encouraging their curiosity. Board games involving more advanced strategic thinking and logic that are suitable for adults as well can provide a link between parent and child.
Outdoor exercise and playground time becomes more important for physical well-being and development. Screen time—in front of the TV and computer—should be limited, which will lead to more active play.
How this age group spends their time is crucial to their brain development. So it’s worth thinking about the range of activities and experiences they are into – music, sports, study, languages, and the arts.
